Electronic Cigarette Health Facts

Ten years ago, the world was very close to the dream of nicotine-free generations but then someone managed to produce electronic cigarettes. Now, we’re in an even worse position than we were in 70s. And here are e-cigarette health facts we will all learn better as e-cig generations grow older.

First Of All, What Is An E-cigarette?

It is a battery powered tool containing liquid mixture of nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and (generally) flavors. This tool heats up the liquid inside (automatically or when you push a button) and turns it into inhalable aerosol. Just like the old fashioned cigarette and other tobacco products, it lets you receive nicotine through your respiratory system. As there is no more smoke but a kind of vapor, this new nicotine receiving method is called ‘vaping’ instead of smoking.

Are E-cigarettes Harmful?

The ones produced under certain standards can be much less harmful than traditional tobacco products but still they come with their own health issues. However, the e-cig juices (nicotine containing liquid) produced by no-name firms can even be more harmful than any other traditional cigarette.

What health problems can electronic cigarette cause?

     Disrupted brain development
Human brain development starts in womb and completes in mid-20s. E-cigs has the potential to harm this natural process. Exposure of young people to nicotine can cause emotional disorders and damage the parts of the brain that control learning.

     Infertility
According to scientific studies, electronic cigarettes can cause low sperm count in men, low quality ovum production in women and poor blood flow in both sexes. These can have negative effects on couples considering pregnancy.

     Complications during pregnancy
Vaping during pregnancy can negatively affect the baby’s brain development and cause permanent damage to organ development. This can further turn into diseases after birth.

     Heart problems
People who use electronic cigarettes are more likely to have coronary artery disease, depression and heart attacks. Compared to non-users, problems such as having a stroke or heart attack are more frequent. Electronic cigarettes can cause blood vessels to harden, preventing oxygenated blood from reaching the heart and other parts of the body. Because of the nicotine it contains, it has been shown to increase the heart rate and prepare the ground for a crisis. This is shown as evidence that it causes serious damage to heart health in the long term.

     Lung problems
Due to the active chemicals and particles, electronic cigarettes tend to cause lung inflammation through asthma and chronic lung disease. This increases the risk of DNA damage and cancer in the long run. Electronic cigarette vapor can also negatively affect immune cells in the lung environment. A study from the University of North Carolina found that two main components in electronic cigarettes (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin) are toxic to cells, which predisposes to lung diseases.

     Dental problems
Research indicates that electronic cigarettes can have negative effects on teeth and gums. Some of these effects can be seen as increased bacteria production, dry mouth, inflamed gums, general irritation and cell death. In a 2018 study, it was observed that teeth exposed to the aerosol of electronic cigarettes produced more bacteria than those who did not. These bacteria were found to be associated with tooth decay, cavities in the teeth or gum disease. In addition, the liquids in electronic cigarettes can cause mouth sores by causing dry mouth. E-cigarettes, which also cause mouth and throat irritation, can cause swelling, tenderness and redness of the gums.
