What is Heart Attack?

The basic function of the heart is supplying every part of our body with enough blood, but sometimes it lacks blood itself. A heart attack is the condition when your heart cannot get enough oxygen and nutritional support, in other words, sufficient blood flow. This problem is one of the top emergency cases for human health, because the case becomes more serious with every moment till proper medical care is given. Every year, heart attacks cause approximately 9 million deaths worldwide, and this corresponds to about 20% of all deaths.

Symptoms of Heart Attack

The impending heart problem often warns you with some symptoms. However, these symptoms differ by gender. For example, pain and discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath, pain in the jaw, neck, back, arm or shoulder occur in both men and women. Dizziness, nausea and feeling of abnormally tiredness are more common in women. The main symptoms of a strain on your heart are:

  • Pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest
  • Sweating for no reason
  • Muscle weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness
  • Palpitations
  • Digestive Problems
  • Swelling of the legs, feet and ankles
  • Sudden change in body weight – rapid weight gain or loss

What are the Causes of Heart Attack?

Blood vessels are the supply motorways of the heart. When these structures get clogged with fatty plaques, blood flow to the heart decreases, and this is the most common reason of heart attacks. Smoking is by far the most common risk factor of clogged vessels. One out of every three heart attacks is related to tobacco usage.
Diabetes is another important disease that increases the risk. Diabetes ruins the flexibility of the vessel walls, resulting in poor blood flow.
Another serious risk factor is obesity. Each kilogram of extra body fat means higher possibility of dysfunction of blood vessels, premature aging and vessel stiffness. When obesity is accompanied by high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, the risks even increase.

How to Keep Healthy After a Heart Attack

A past heart attack means that you are at a higher risk for another one and related problems. Although your doctor will offer you a variety of precautions depending on your unique condition, these are the general steps to lower the chance of future health problems:
Balance your physical activity: We don’t offer you a sedentary life but a life that will fit your current health state. Limit your physical activities as your doctor advises and give your heart a good rest. Increase physical activities gradually as your health care provider tells you.
Change your lifestyle: A healthier diet, quality sleep and quitting smoking will do a lot of good to your overall health.
Cardiac rehabilitation: This is a combined care approach that involves physical activity, healthy living education and stress managing with mental improvement techniques. Ask your doctor for a cardiac rehabilitation program designed for you.
