What is Skin Allergy

Skin allergy is a condition caused by several triggers suppressing the immune system. This allergy can occur in response to certain medications, foods, insect bites, infections and even weather. This condition often shows up in early childhood and manifests itself with symptoms such as itching, rash, and swelling on the skin. These skin problems can be classified as eczema, contact dermatitis, hives, and food allergy. Here are brief explanations of each:

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): Atopic dermatitis causes symptoms such as redness, inflammation, dryness, and peeling of the skin, and can worsen due to seasonal changes and excessive stress.

Contact dermatitis: This occurs when foreign substances such as perfume, nickel, and cobalt come into contact with the skin.

Hives: Caused by contact with certain medications or substances, hives are uncomfortable skin conditions, generally with symptoms disappearing within a few hours.

Food allergy: This type of allergy occurs when the skin reacts allergically to certain foods, manifesting as symptoms such as itching, rashes, and redness.

What are the symptoms of skin allergies?

Skin allergy symptoms seen in areas such as the face, feet, neck, and chest include the following:

  • Severe itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Swelling
  • Scaling
  • Blisters
  • Burning sensation

Skin allergy symptoms vary from person to person, so some individuals may experience one symptom, while others may experience multiple symptoms. In addition, in some cases, a drop in heart rate and shock may rarely occur.

What causes skin allergies?

The factors that cause skin allergies vary depending on the type of allergy. Eczema, which is very common, occurs mainly due to genetic factors. However, it can also develop due to contact with chemical products such as shampoo, soap, and detergent. Environmental factors such as dry air, pollen, and humidity can also contribute to the development of atopic dermatitis.

When discussing the causes of food allergies, it is possible to say that they are caused by the consumption of certain foods. It can occur when consuming certain foods such as milk, peanuts, eggs, and walnuts. In food allergies, which can develop even from smelling the food, the only good treatment is staying totally away from the allergen food.

Another type of skin allergy, contact dermatitis, is caused by chemical substances which may include makeup, hair dye, deodorant, and perfume. It can also occur when chemical elements such as nickel and cobalt come into contact with the skin.

Hives, also known as urticaria, can develop after an internal problem like an inflammatory infection or with environmental factors like cold, hot, and pressurized air. This allergy, which activates the immune system’s defense cells, accumulates in the body and causes regional symptoms.

How does skin allergy go away?

To get rid of skin allergies, you must first stay away from allergen triggers. In addition, depending on the underlying cause, appropriate treatment can be administered by a doctor. At this point, a diagnosis is made through allergy tests, and intervention is performed according to the source causing the related discomfort. In most cases of skin allergies that do not completely go away, long term treatment can be administered to control the symptoms.
